's election day. and the polls here in california just opened about 55 second ago. the months of campaigning the millions of dollars spent on ads comes down to this day. the presidential race remains a dead heat with the latest poll showing president obama and mitt romney still neck in neck in the all important battleground states. mitt romney voted this morning near his boston area home with his wife. romney is now heading to ohio and then pennsylvania where he is making last-minute campaign appearances. this was just announced yesterday before heading back to boston this evening. president obama is back home in chicago where he will watch the results come in later this evening. coming up at 7:15, we will have a guide to the key returns today and when we could know the results of the presidential election. >> time 7:01 you heard tori the polls opened moments ago here in california. we have reporters all over the bay area covering today's local, state and national issues. you see the reporters there tara and everybody else we will start with ktvu's at polling place in san jose good morning.
may find out if same sex couples here in california will once again be able to get married legally. ktvu alison burns in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us what is at stake at the u.s. supreme court. >> reporter: some people are calling this one of the most significant issues ever before the court. can the government prohibit people from getting married? the justices will meet behind closed doors today to decide if they will take up several challenges to gay marriage laws including california's ban on gay marriage proposition eight. same sex marriage supporters many of them are hoping court will let a lower court decision stand that overturned prop 8. san francisco city attorney dennis tells us if that happens couples could marry almost immediately. >> we want to be prepared if marriages do start to number one have staff on hand to perform marriages because there could be crowds. and number two from public safety per speck tiff. >> the justices will also announce if they will consider whether same sex marriage deserves equal treatment under federal law and if the governments

the longest commute in california? california watch is reporting that designation goes to contra costa county. people who live in contra costa county spend an average of 32.8 minutes in their cars every day. in contra costa county, 17% of the people travel an hour or more to get to work. compared to humboldt, the average commute is about 17 minutes. around the state, fewer than one in 10 california residents commute for more than an hour. >>> speaking of commuting, let's check in with sal. many people have the day off for veterans day so i'm thinking it will be lieser -- lighter than unusual. let's take a look at some of -- at some of these commutes. you will be able to tell immediately at the toll plaza where it is light. you don't have to worry about getting into the city. there's certainly people out there. same thing with san francisco, northbound 101 traffic looks good. no problems on 280. on the nimitz freeway. 7:08. let's go to steve it's cold. yes, yes, yes. but not as cold as sunday morning when we had clear skies. saw a little ice out there. colder start, though, for many. we had a
